California personalized plate rules, tested against the real DMV
Updated August 2026. Written from our own full sweep of the CA plate space.
Most articles about plate rules paraphrase the DMV’s help text. We did something different: we checked tens of thousands of real configurations against the DMV’s own availability system and wrote down what it actually accepts and refuses. These are the rules as enforced, not as summarized.
The basics
- 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers.
- All-numeric configurations are rejected outright. That is why there are 1,196 legal 2-character combinations rather than 1,296.
- Half spaces and full spaces are allowed, and each counts toward the 7-character limit.
- Symbols (heart, star, hand, plus) are only available on the Kids specialty plate, and a symbol counts as a character.
What we learned by testing spaces
Interior spaces are real characters: ND IT N is a legal 7-character configuration. But leading and trailing spaces are stripped. We verified this directly: the DMV returns the same answer for ZEN, ZEN with a trailing space, and ZEN with a leading one. They are the same plate. You cannot use padding to shift where your characters sit on the plate.
Motorcycles
Motorcycle personalized plates run 2 to 5 characters (the plate is physically smaller), where autos go to 7. The configuration pool is shared: the DMV’s availability system gives the same answer regardless of vehicle type, and its exchange rules move a configuration between plate types whenever the length fits. So every check on this site applies to a motorcycle too. Keep it to 5 characters or fewer and everything here, including the fully swept 2-character and 3-letter data, is motorcycle territory.
Why a plate gets rejected
Beyond availability, the DMV refuses configurations it considers reserved, misleading, or offensive. Its validation runs before any human review, and a rejection there is final for that configuration. Check before you fall in love
