License plate ideas that are not already taken

Every list of “great vanity plate ideas” has the same flaw: the good ones are gone. We ran 173 words people actually want on a car, MUSTANG, VORTEX, SUNSET, GOLDEN, PHOENIX, NITRO, ZEN, LEGACY among them, against the California DMV. Every single one is taken. So this page is not a list of words. It is the strategies that still produce a plate you can really order.

Strategies that still work

1. Go to 6 or 7 characters. The short space is stripped bare, but the long space is wide open. Compound words, phrases with an interior space, and word plus number all live here.
2. Substitute inside a taken word. Number-for-letter swaps (3 for E, 1 for I, 0 for O) often free up a word whose plain spelling is gone. Our generator proposes DMV-legal variants automatically and checks each one live.
3. Use an interior space. ND IT N style configurations read differently and are far less picked over.
4. Split the word with Extra. If you want METALLICA and it is taken in every form, claim the middle chunk that is still open and complete the word with printed letters beside the plate. That is ClaimPlate Extra.

What the data says about short plates

We checked all 1,196 legal 2-character combinations and all 17,576 3-letter combinations. A handful of 2-character plates remain, listed on our live 2-character page, and about 3,500 3-letter combinations are open, though almost none are real words.
