How do I check if a California license plate is available?
Type any configuration after claimplate.com/plate/ (for example /plate/HELLO) and the page runs a live check against the CA DMV’s own availability system. Or use the DMV’s configurator directly.
How much does a California personalized plate cost?
The application fee is $103 and it is not refundable, even if your configuration gets rejected, which is why you should check availability before applying. Keeping the plate also adds an annual retention fee on top of your registration.
Can I buy, sell, or reserve a California vanity plate?
No. Under California Vehicle Code section 5101, personalized plates are non-transferable state property. They cannot be sold, auctioned, or reserved by anyone, including ClaimPlate. Availability is strictly first come, first served at the DMV. Services like our watch alerts sell notification speed, never the plate itself.
How many 2-character California plates are still available?
4 of the 1,196 legal 2-character combinations, as of our latest nightly sweep. The full list, with live re-checks, is at /available/2-character. Our 3-letter sweep has confirmed 3575 available so far.
What characters are allowed on a California plate?
2 to 7 characters: letters A–Z, digits 0–9, and single spaces. All-numeric configurations are rejected, and the DMV’s validation also blocks reserved and offensive combinations.
What happens to a plate when the owner stops renewing?
If the annual retention fee isn’t paid, the owner loses the configuration and it becomes available for reassignment (13 CCR § 206.12). The DMV publishes no schedule for this; registrations renew year-round, so plates trickle back into the pool continuously. That’s what our nightly sweeps watch for.
